Handmade Victorian Stockings

About twelve years ago I made these stockings for my husband and I. I drew a stocking off on newspaper, as they're pretty big. I was really into crazy quilting at the time.

I embroidered our initials on them.

If you're interested in making some of these, first I'd say start collecting fabrics such as velvets and tweeds and shiny, fancy bits of material. I bought mens' ties and suit coats and prom and wedding dresses at garage sales and thrift stores on the very cheap.

There are various ways to get the fancy fabrics onto a base fabric. I would start with one fancy piece of material and put it somewhere about the center of my base (which was typically muslin. This is separate from the muslin lining.) You sew one piece down, then start adding to it, much like a puzzle.
You can line them with muslin or whatever you'd like. I learned many embroidery stitches, and began embellishing. There are also beads and buttons and charms sewn on.

Here are some pillows I've made this way.

Some I've made with simple cotton.

I made cat and heart shaped ones too.

I enjoyed making spider webs with little beaded spiders. I usually put them in a corner.

Crazy quilting is a lot of fun. You can use up small pieces of fabric. And it's the sort of project where you can do a little at a time. Lay it down and pick it back up while watching TV or listening to music.

There are many books to get you started.

I'm linking up to Jami's Air Your Laundry Friday.
