Write The Right Words: A Book Review

Sometimes I think we're going to lose sight of the written word in our own handwriting altogether. In this highly computerized age, we rarely have need for a pen and a box of cards. Those our mothers and grandmothers always kept around for various occasions. And would pull out of a desk drawer, and then sit down to write a long heartfelt message.

This book by Sandra E. Lamb urges us to preserve this form of proper etiquette. When you write something in your own handwriting, it establishes and cements relationships.

Remember the pen pal? I do. Someone our own age was found in another region for us to correspond with. We learned about different ways of living and other cultures through our letters. Bonds were formed, even though we'd likely never meet in person.

With the ease of email messages, we often don't see even a handwritten note on an important occasion. Maybe just a card from Hallmark, if we're lucky, and a hastily scrawled signature.

Lamb emphasizes that a greeting card needs a personal message to accompany it. Because seeing someone's familiar handwriting evokes in us a feeling that is far beyond an email signature.

She gives tips to those who have trouble putting their thoughts into words. For every conceivable occasion. She provides sample messages to help facilitate just what it is you want to express.

This book is a guide to keep that personal connection alive. To put a smile on the recipient's face when they reach into the mailbox and see your card. And then when they open it, and see that you've also included a handwritten letter, they know how very much they are loved.
