Gardening In Rock Beds & A Giveaway!

You never know what you’ll spot through a camera lens. I happened to find the beautiful spider web on a bird feeder this morning. Spider webs delight me with their intricacy.

Now for gardening between rocks.

I chose to plant in between my flagstone walkway instead of cementing the stones in. But you have to choose the right plants and flowers for success in sandy soil.

You can also add other items of interest, of course.

Above, moss rose in between flagstone. I also leave potting soil around the plant when I put it in the sand, to give it those added nutrients.

I try to choose plants that are drought-tolerant to start with, as the sand will drain so quickly. So herbs, succulents and sedums are a great choice.

I’ve used lots of varieties of thyme and oregano.

Along the path right inside the gate I have mint growing. I want visitors to enjoy the scent when they enter my garden from the back.

In small areas between rocks I’ve added smaller polished stones to hopefully, over time, help keep the sand somewhat in place as it settles.

While I was out running errands this afternoon, I stopped in at Hobby Lobby. I found to my surprise that these stones were on sale half price. So I bought ten three pound bags. Yes, I know it is the hard way to accomplish this task. But I don’t own a pickup to go to the rock yard. I also use these stones when making fairy gardens.

Of course I had to go down nearly every aisle to make sure I didn’t miss any great sales. I will put the half-priced colored bottles on my coffee table under the pavilion. I want to put the half-priced garden sign somewhere under the eaves of the pavilion. And then the Apothecary sign I will put inside, I suppose. I didn’t really need it, but it was priced so darned well I couldn’t pass it up.
